My Son - The Warrior

I teach my son to protect his momma. A man must watch out for his family. When a bug needs squashed – he does it. When a job must be done – he steps up.

At 10 PM on Wednesday my wife screamed. She was standing on the bed. It was our first mouse this winter. I called my two Jack Russell pups into the room and closed the door. “Get em’ girls,” I growled. They tilted their head as if to say “Huh?” After about ten minutes they caught on. So did my wife - she left the room. Then David, my five-year-old, came to help. He knew there was trouble. He was ready to step up.

I gave him a shoe. “If you squash it I’ll buy you a transformer. If the dogs get it we’ll give them a bone.” He was'nt scared. He was ready for action. For the next 40 minutes we chased that mouse from corner to corner. The dogs were no hunters. But my son was a warrior. He charged into the closet to flush out the enemy. He cornered it. Then growled to show the dogs how to do it.

We showed overwhelming force. The mouse had no chance. It played dead. The dogs lost interest. David asked, “Should'nt we just put it outside?” He was right. There was no honor in squashing a captured foe. I picked it up by its tail. “First, we need to show your momma.”

I think I've fixed the problem. My buddy says it was something to do with Tulips. Whatever that means.

Uh Tony? Its cats that chase mice, not dogs. What are they teaching you at Southern Seminary?

it's works now.

bhedr, Jack Russells are supposed to be bred to hunt. I guess mine aren't as pure as they look. From the Jack Russell website.

"They will not tolerate vermin in their world. Rats, mice (little rats) chipmunks (rats with stripes) squirrels (rats with bushy tails) all are relentlessly hunted to their eventual extermination. This has been their job for decades." quoted from http://www.jackrussells.com/jrtinfo.html (accessed 12/13/2005)

I stand corrected. How simplistic of me. As you were.

Innocent mistake. Only a real dog would hold it against you.

We have a Jack Russell and he would have taken the life from your mouse with much glee, I'm afraid. Not too long ago, a wayward chipmunk graced our home and once he got the scent, there was no stopping him. What a mad dash that was! Finally cornered it in the kitchen and that, as they say, was the end of that.
I'm so surprised that your duo didn't show the famous JR killer instinct.
Fun story with your son, though!

Thanks Jane, send them over. I think we have mouse #2 (or the ill advised return of #1)
